me and ivan went to 4 places to try and get my car smogged. nobody wanted to smog it due to its height since they had to put it on the dyno. the fourth place finally tested my car. I figured id pass since i didnt have any check engine light. I was hoping the tech didnt notice my non-carb legal header. i failed visual (header), gas cap, hc's, and nox. at least a put a more aggressive lip on...

How do you fail for a gas cap? Does the stock exhaust manifold have a eat shield? You could try putting the heat shield over your header to make it look stock. Man smog blows, I'd say ef that shiz

yeah. my gas cap had cracks in the seal. i knew that before i went; i just forgot about it til they were testing it. when i worked at the state contracted smog facility in IL (air team) we had to test gas caps for their seals and one way check valve. like robbie said they dont want hc's (unburned fuel vapors) floating up to the ozone. the nice thing about where i lived in IL is we had smogs (IL called it an emissions test), but they didnt care what you have done to your car. you could be turbo'd and swapped as long as it burned as clean as the factory engine. I passed plenty of s10's with 350s and and swapped/turbo'd hondas as long as the car had a good cat and good tune and no CEL or major fluid leaks

Finally did my timing belt, water pump, cam seals crank shaft seal and valve cover gasket two weeks ago!

I should probably keep track of milage now that I am finally driving the car...
the best way to tell how often to change is to do the first change early (say 3-5k miles) and send a sample to someplace like Blackstone for analysis, they will tell you if you still have more life left in your current oil change or not and if you do about how much.
synthetic does extend it a little bit but between oil consumption and condition of the engine (blowby) oil capacity dictates change interval a lot more. I'd say if you don't have the coin to spring for an oil test right now keep it at no more than 5k for your car.

filter also plays a big role, if you use something like a shitty fram then i wouldnt go over 3k.
wix all the way, very similar to a mobil 1/k&n and about 1/3 the price.

yeah, don't even use FRAM to begin with, shit is garbage to the max. +1 for Wix filters. Carquest filters are Wix usually, they have solid internal construction.
