Full Version: Cops and your slammed car.
SlamBurglars > General Discussion > Car Talk
drift kid
Hey, as you would probably know, i live in Australia and drive on the correct side of the road lol, but anyways i was wondering what it is like with the police over there in America, over here its crazy, like driving my car daily is a task, dodging police and being followed etc, once pulled over by a 'Law Enforcer' they will issue ones self with a 'Defect Notice' which basically means that the car is un-roadworthy (in their eyes) and make you rectify these problems to meet strict and stupid rules/regulations, its a large issue in the car modifying scene Australia wide, what im asking today is, do you, as lowdown car driving cool cats ever have issues with the cops? is there an equivalent to our "Defects" over there in your country? or do your police chase people that actually commit REAL crimes?
kfed
Like in most countries, the government or 'higher' officials will always be douchebags about the tuner scene (for the most part). From what I've read about Australia, your law enforcement is a hell of a lot more strict than it is here.. But then again it does differ in different states. In the state of Nevada, the 'low' law has not been pushed out yet but there has been talk about it; in California the other hand, has the 'low' law and strictly enforces it (ask Ivan and Harry - lol).

Overall, yes they are against tuners. And no they're not as strict as Australia, chasing people as if it was a crime etc.
Ivan the Terrible
I've almost had my car towed with a 600 doillar fine since it wasn't "safe" for street use.

All other times I've been pulled over for being low was just a "raise it so you don't get a ticket by another cop"

In SB the cops aren't bad, doesn't mean you can let your gaurd down.
yellowxhoodie
I got a ticket a couple years back. Citation was for "unlawful bumper height"

I think the only reason he pulled me over was because it was 3:00 AM on July 3rd
jdmae86
im glad i live on the east coast... no bullshit to deal with
drift kid
oh yea, so nothing like our defects? just a ticket? (i assume thats the same as a fine?) over here getting a defect cleared from your vehicle is a massive stuff arround and is usually quite costly
Ironfist
I've been warned twice before then came the ticket. Said my exhaust was dragging on the road and as soon as he got next to my car, he pulled out a measuring tape and wrote me for being a "hazard". If I didn't fix it my ticket would've been 300
Adrian_S13
Out here in the midwest or at least IL. I've never been pulled over for being low. They'll get me for exhaust and mention my car is realy low. Its hit or miss some cops really dont care others are gay. A few years back I got a ticket at one of our spots streeting. A few months later we go back 5 cars deep, cops showed up made sure we were clear and told us "lets see what these cara got" as in hit it as you leave. We all lit it up as we left and that was that.
Nachtmensch
Never a problem. They think the car is worth more than it is.
drift kid
man our laws suck so bad over here sad.gif like for a simple thing such as the boot latches i have to hold my hatch shut, that is a defect in its self due to them possibly injuring somebody if that person struk the car, and thats just the beggining of the stupidity of it all.

Cops are just as bad over here in NZ man. 3rd time i drive my car after slaming it. Get green stickered. Which means i have to be off the road within 2 hours and fix whats wrong, then take it for a $100 w.o.f check then i can drive it. But we do have "certification" which means you pay $450 and some engineer looks at the car ans says its safe at any height ( they generally only certify 40mm + though) then you cant get ticketed for being low, because you have "certification".
EhrikETFG
^ man you guys get screwed, at least you have cool animals i guess.
krammitthefrog
i used to think the laws were stupid, but they are in affect for your safety. your low/slanted nosed car gets hit head on by a regular height suv, you've got an instant convertible and no head.

i'd have to say the reason australia is so strict on these rules is because they actually wish to enforce them, rather than lightly punish you with a payable fine. basically, they don't want you to do it again. i got tired of worrying about hitting everything in the road and tired of being stared at by cops when i drove by. kinda why i realized it was pointless to be "as low as is necessary to be cool". as with anything you gotta pay to play.
jdmae86
i have never been pulled over for anything other then speeding... cops out here could careless

man i wish it was that easy over here sad.gif there's only a set few engineers in the whole state (which the roads and traffic authority RTA) choose and they all run by strict rules so they won't touch many cars, and that's costly to have your car engineered, like im talking 1500+ dollars sad.gif

solution?

drive car at more reasonable height.

is it any less enjoyable to slide?

IF you truly enjoy drifting for drifting, or racing for racing, you will do what you can to achieve the satisfaction of partaking in this activity in any way that you can. if you can't do it by being not being retardly low, you are doing it for the wrong reason.
Ivan the Terrible
I do drift to drift and its fun, but wana be slammed. So I adapt and buy shit to keep suspension geometry correct-ish. Its not cheap to do this but if you wana slide better, ya being at a reasonable height is important but you can adapt to that situation with parts.

Its up to the person who does it, for me ima be slammed as fuck and slide till the day someone says "hey ill give you money if you raise your car" gotta sell out when given the opportunity.

Yea being low is stupid but I enjoy it and pushing the limit, how else is anyone or anything suppose to progress? Even if you don't agree with what I say think about it. Like its been said, gotta pay to play.
krammitthefrog
i never said being low was stupid. i said the reason behind why this kid is doing it is. its not to slide better, its to try to look cool.

not my car so i can't say what do with it though.

but if the kids gonna complain about not even being able to drive his car, maybe he should reconsider what is important.

this is why i want to get out of the car scene for good. so much judgement passed on how your car looks, theres always this push to make it cool to other people. you cant enjoy it yorself without someone saying its not right.

to me thats not even a hobby.
Andrevas
I would jump the car scene if I let other people's judgement on my car get to me. sure, I'm one of the douchebags passing it to others, but if they can't take it they should GTFO. in the end it's my/their car so how it looks to me/them is all that matters. right now it's a bunch of other lame shit that makes me turned off about cars, like $$$

OP, sounds like your country has some fucked up laws. all I can say is, either fight to change them (not very likely), or try to live with them by either not breaking them or how to get around them. we all have some sort of bullshit to deal with. sucks, but that's life. haters gonna hate.
Ivan the Terrible
You never said it but you're implying it JUDGING by your response. I agree with you, some people are in the game for the wrong reason, because its the "cool" thing to do.

But

You can be in the car game and not care what people think, if you wana leave just cause people JUDGE you about your car then maybe ya its not your thing and can't handle the JUDGing you'll get but then how will they know if you don't post pics?

Solution, don't post pics if you don't want to receive critisim. Easy but that's not the subject matter at hand.

Its either you deal with it or you don't. Its the law and they will enforce it
steveboiboi
come live in england its a joke... haha far to easy...
krammitthefrog
its not about people judging my car, its about the attitude of how people view their cars. its not even about enjoying it anymore, its a material object and its about getting the coolest car to be the most swag or whatever.

half the shit i see people put on their cars looks ridiculous, and its all just to get attention.

anyone who actually enjoys sliding or racing, heres a question.

would you raise your car up so everyone calls you a fag if it slid better than sitting on a ground with everyone calling you cool?

if you say no, you're playing into the shit you just said i was doing, going by what other people think. i dont give a fuck about what people say my car looks like or whatever. every time i've raised it up, you guys ask me why? because i have 10x more fun driving than i did breaking the exahust hangers on speedbumps, driving with some retarded camber for no reason.

this kid is misinformed as to what is truly fun if you ask me, and i wish i'd been told to enjoy my car stock before slapping a bunch of crap onto it first because it was cool.

if you drive a show car, i get it. make it as outlandish as you want. but if you want to enjoy racing your car, i swear its the best thing you can do.
Ivan the Terrible
And again this falls into the category of what YOU think is "cool"

To me being slammed and sliding is "cool", to you driving a car wth proper suspension geometry and not slammed is "cool". Its all about peoples opinions on what THEY drive, THEIR personal car and what they think is "cool" and not about what others think.

We live in a superficial world, people are gonna judge everyone. Specially on the internet where there's distance between people and not face to face. Its like when we judge BRC and their cars. To us their cars are ugly as fuck, to them they are "cool" don't get all heated up about it man. I understand you may have a "mature" out look on modding cars but remember this site is partially based off slammed cars and people who love them. Give your opinion but keep a level of respect to one another and play nice.

Again if you have an opinion about this pm me, robbie or the person, this thread is about how people cope with low cars in their area not what you think about low cars.
krammitthefrog
missed the point completely.

kids gotta drive the car everyday right? how practical is driving a car like that? (i'm asking him)
choose to drive it how you want, because i know you'll go the way of what your friends say is cool. if thats how you truly want it, then you gotta man up and deal with the laws.

and i'd like to see if anyone wants to answer my question. i'll take it in pm if nobody wants to say it publicly for fear of criticism.

I raised my car after my 3rd drift event and I've had it sky jacking since about april maybe? I've driven 3 events with it high and it felt amazing and I've been doing better with every event. About a week ago I got tired of it looking like ass hole so I dropped it again. I'm really curious to see how much worse it handles, and if I do better or worse than before. Honestly I don't care about what most other people think of my car. I just do what I feel is best. Not sure if that answered the question.

It seems like the people most sensitive to the criticism are the ones dishing it out the most. I think the op should decide for himself if he wants to slam his car. The title of this site is SLAMburglars, am I not mistaken? Right under that it says: frame bang gang. 90% of people on this site are primarily interested in slammed cars. That's not to say that people won't respect you if you aren't laying frame, but it is the primary reason people come here. If the op wants a slammed car badly enough, he'll embrace the law issues or find a way around it. Or if the laws are too much to handle (really can't blame you), then he shouldn't feel too bad for raising his car a bit. Sure it won't look as good, but at least it won't give you a bunch of tickets. If you want a slammed car, slam your car and know you'll have to live with ridiculous laws and broken shit. If you like slammed cars but can't handle the baggage they bring (I primarily fall in this group), don't feel bad for having a moderate drop instead of slammage. Either way, you're car can still be sick as fuck.

I daily my car , low , poking wheels , big stickers on the windshield , load RsR* exhaust , and no front plate and have yet to be pulled over

Thats because you drive a miata! lol I'm kidding either your lucky or something. I get pulled over all the time for my exhaust, and every time they pulled me over instantly pulled the "Are you on probation, Is there anything thing illegal in the car, Can you pop the hood?" I have a stock KA with an Apexi cat back, and I'm kind of low.

no slammed harrassment here. but honestly, as long as your car is emissions legal, passes inspection, and you have insurance, you can do whatever the fuck you want to your car.

In florida, if you get a fix-it ticket, even if you fix the violation, you still have to pay the full fine. feels bad man.

Ive blown a lane dot off infront of a state trooper with it bouncing off his windshield in my old 91, cop did nothing. They arent all douchebags, just luck of the draw in which ever country you live in.
AkaZero
I have driven a lime green, REALLY loud 240 that would occasionally spark and backfire ( no cat ). And never got pulled over.

I got pulled over all the time in my jetta.... for reasons like "dirty license plate." When I lived on a dirt road.

+1 , don't do the crime if you can't do the time. everyone on here should be aware of the possibility of being ticketing when doing an illegal mod. if your car is too low/loud, tint is too dark, or you drive like a jerkface, then you should already be aware of the risks.

deolio
i've only been pulled over once just for being low and shooting sparks, but talked my way out of it. other times i've been pulled over they haven't even mentioned how low i was. only i've only gotten one ticket.

as long as you aren't driving like a jackass, constantly shooting sparks, or have a loud fart cannon you're fine for the most part.
