So I'm in a furniture design and construction class this semester at school. The goal of the class is to design and build a piece of furniture within the 15 week semester. My professor basically told the class that its going to be hard to design and finish a seating piece in the time frame. So that scared all of my classmates into making shelving and small coffee tables. So i wanted to designed a chair because I'm hardheaded and shelving/tables are boring to me. My design is a modern take on a shop stool/drum throne. The spherical seating area and bottom base will be made of solid maple. The back rest out will be molded out of maple veneer. The three legs will be aluminum hex with steel solid rod ends similar to adjustable toe rods on a car. The chair itself will be able to move with three spherical polyurethane casters.

first step is to make the mold for the backrest that will be later pressed in a vacuum bag. The mold is made out of sandwiched 5/8" particle board cut to different lengths to give the rest its concave shape.


For the veneer to have a good glue up the mold needs to be perfectly smooth... bring on the bondo.

I defined the shape with a wood rasp and sanded it with 120 and 220 grit.

Last time I posted it was about making the mold for the backrest. The veneer from the backrest hasn’t arrived yet so I’m moving onto the metal legs and brackets. For the design I wanted to fuse my love of cars with this chair. To achieve this I used thread rods with solid rod ends similar to most adjustable suspension links.

Metal brackets had to be designed and fabricated to attach the legs to the base and sitting area.

I have yet to finish grinding and painting the brackets but you get the idea.
