Sorry if this is a repeat and is on the site somewhere. If it is just send me a link and I'll get to cutting!
I'm currently saving for coilovers. In the mean time I want to cut my springs to eliminate some of my awesome wheel gap. Can I get an inch in the rear by cutting the springs? I only have one set of springs and I don't want to screw this up. Is it all trial and error? Do I cut the top of the spring or the bottom? Or is it a waste of time and I should just wait for my coilovers? I have a 1990 miata with 1.5 inches between the tire and the rear fender. Any thoughts? |

Prior to getting my suspension, I had shocks with dampening capabilities as well as some cut Megan Springs. I didn't have a problem and I was sitting super gnar.
Only thing you have to worry about is blowing your shock and of course the way your car will ride. I cut mine from the top, but you have to watch out how many you cut because when you lower your car you wanna make sure the spring is lock in place and not popped out.. lol This is how I was sitting with cut springs/shocks set to all the way stiff..  P.S I am selling my cut spring/shock suspension combo, if you're interested in buying it.. I do need Christmas monies

pro's- cheap
con's- very bumpy ride, destroys shocks, have to be carefull over large bumps in the roads or when jacking the car up so the spring doesnt move out of place --------------------  |

What about heating up your springs and swishing them down? anybody do this?

but you won't be able to control the exact amount of heat.
i mean theoretically it would work but there are too many variables that could interfere. cutting the springs is the best way to mess up, i mean lower yoru car if you have the option of the two haha. i have sooper cut springs and i hate it.. but it gets me low.. my uncle had heated springs in his 240 and that was HORRIBLE, we were bouncing around every where it was scary to go above 60 mph -------------------- Cuttin' Sprangs |

cut your springs and weld them to the spring perches...done! haha you wont be using them when you get coilovers any way and then you dont have to worry about the spring popping out!

Don't waste any time cutting your springs. Doesn't impress anyone and its really not worth the effort.
Just chillax and focus on other shit, and before you know it your coilovers will be here. seeings cars going down the road bouncing uncontrollably looks waaay retarded. WAIT. who gives a shit about wheel gap when you're stock. my daily is sky high and it never once crossed my mind to cut my stock springs. As a matter of fact I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Seriously? Not shitting on anyone but...cutting your springs is useless and stupid.
The amount of effort it takes to go out and get them cut and install them is pointless. Not to mention your stock struts will blow in about a months time. The ONLY way I can see cut springs being anywhere close to effective or safe is if you have aftermarket struts that can support the modified height. Stock struts were designed in relation to certain shock specs, which is why aftermarket ones are designed in relation to other variables and can withstand things stock ones can't. On another note, they're unpredictable as aids, especially if you end up blowing your struts. Imagine what would happen while your going around a turn doing roughly 80km/h and you hit a nice bump in the road? Anyone with stiff suspension and a predictable car knows what can happen and ways to counteract that...good luck counteracting your boat on wheels. Cut springs, really wasn't bad though.. I can obviously tell the difference between those and coils.. But I wasn't on stock struts.

i personally havent had good experiences with it. but oldschool guys in japan used to do it all the time on their trd rear springs.
big name guys would do it cause uncut trd height is weak. --------------------  |
